The World Bank has officially announced the appointment of Mathew Verghis as its new Country Director for Nigeria, effective July 1, 2025. Verghis replaces Dr. Ndiame Diop, who has transitioned to a new role within the global financial institution.
In a statement released on Friday, the World Bank described Verghis, an Indian national, as a seasoned economist with over 20 years of experience in economic policy and global development. He joined the World Bank in 1999 and has served in various senior leadership positions across Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Central Asia.
Before this new appointment, Verghis was the Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in South Asia, operating out of Washington, D.C.

As Country Director, Verghis will lead the World Bank’s engagement in Nigeria, guiding the institution’s efforts to support economic reforms, poverty reduction, job creation, and sustainable development initiatives. His role also includes strengthening partnerships with the Nigerian government, civil society organisations, and other development stakeholders.
Strong Academic and Professional Background
Verghis holds a Master’s and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Notre Dame in the United States. He is widely published on critical topics including growth strategies, fiscal policy, labour markets, and poverty reduction.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Position in Sub-Saharan Africa
The World Bank emphasized that Nigeria remains central to its regional development strategy in Sub-Saharan Africa. With Mathew Verghis at the helm, the institution aims to help Nigeria unlock its vast economic potential through strategic reforms and investments that deliver tangible, inclusive benefits to millions of citizens.
