Wike Revokes Over 4,794 Land Titles in FCT Over Unpaid Ground Rent.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revoked 4,794 land titles due to the non-payment of Ground Rent for over 10 years. The affected properties are spread across major districts, including Central Area, Garki I & II, Wuse I & II, Asokoro, Maitama, and Guzape.

According to the FCTA Director of Lands, Chijioke Nwankwoeze, and the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, the FCTA had repeatedly warned property owners through public notices in newspapers and broadcast media since 2023. However, compliance remained low.

Key Highlights:

  • 8,375 property owners have defaulted on Ground Rent payments for up to 43 years, owing a total of ₦6.97 billion.
  • 4,794 land titles were revoked for non-payment exceeding 10 years, in line with Section 28 of the Land Use Act.
  • A 21-day grace period has been given to defaulters owing between 1 and 10 years to settle their debts or face revocation.

The FCTA emphasized that Ground Rent is a legal obligation, due annually on January 1st, and failure to pay violates the Right of Occupancy conditions.
