FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims that the recent explosion at Mogadishu Barracks, located along the Nyanya-Mararaba road in Abuja, was the result of a failed suicide bombing.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday during a site inspection in the capital, Wike dismissed the report by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), describing it as inaccurate and misleading. He clarified that the incident was not terrorism-related but a tragic accident caused by ignorance.

According to Wike, the victim unknowingly picked up an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from a quarry site where rocks are typically blasted for construction. The device later detonated while in the victim’s pocket.

“Security agencies never described it as a suicide bombing,” Wike said.
“The individual had no idea what he was handling. We should avoid stirring panic or pushing wrong narratives. NEMA is not a security authority — only the official security agencies can determine the nature of such incidents.”

Earlier reports had suggested that a suicide bomber attempted to infiltrate the barracks before the device exploded. NEMA was among the first to issue this claim. However, the FCT Police Command, through spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh, stated that a comprehensive investigation, including forensic analysis, is underway to determine the real cause of the explosion.

The incident caused panic among residents and commuters in the area, sparking widespread speculation on social media and in the press.

Wike emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, warning agencies and media outlets against spreading unverified information that could create fear among Abuja residents.
