Wike Declares No Extension for Ground Rent Payment, Warns Defaulters of Asset Seizure.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has announced that there will be no further extension for the payment of ground rents. He warned property owners who fail to comply that their assets may be seized and reverted to the FCT Administration.

The statement, issued by Rabi Musa Umar, Assistant Director Press at the Minister’s Office, came after Wike inspected key infrastructure projects in Wuse and Life Camp. According to him, previous grace periods—including a presidential intervention granting an additional two to three weeks—expired months ago.

  • “It’s unfortunate that most Nigerians who complain don’t want to abide by the rules. We had a presidential intervention to give more time, but it’s more than four months now. We cannot carry out projects without people paying their taxes,” the minister said.

Wike stressed that notices extending the deadline were already published, but many residents postponed payment until enforcement began. He made it clear that this is the final opportunity for defaulters to settle their outstanding ground rents.

“We are not going to extend any further,” he warned.

The minister explained that enforcement actions will include sealing defaulting properties, which will then revert to the FCT Administration.

  • “If you have not paid, we will seal the premises and the property then becomes the property of the FCT Administration,” Wike said.

Infrastructure Updates

During the inspection, Wike provided updates on ongoing road projects:

  • Transit Way N2, linking the Central Business District to Wuse, is expected to be completed by May or June 2026.
  • Arterial Road N5, from Life Camp Junction to Karmo, is scheduled for handover by the end of January 2026.

He commended the quality and progress delivered by Levante Construction Ltd and Julius Berger, describing the work as impressive. Funding for the N2 project comes under emergency provisions, while adequate financing for the N5 road has been included in the FCT’s 2025 budget.

Regarding newly commissioned bus terminals, Wike confirmed that the procurement process to select operators is ongoing, and he is confident it will conclude before the end of the year.
