Wike Cancels Apo-Karshi Road Contract, Reassigns Project to Accelerate Completion.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday announced the revocation of the 13-kilometre Apo-Karshi Road contract, initially awarded to Kakatar Construction Company Ltd. in 2011.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing road projects—including the Karu-Customs-CBN Road, Gishiri-Katampe Road, and Apo-Wasa Carriageway—Wike expressed dissatisfaction with the previous contractor’s pace. He revealed that the project has now been re-awarded under an emergency arrangement to SCC, a firm deemed capable of executing the work efficiently.

  • “Let me tell you the truth, we have terminated that contract; it has been re-awarded to SCC. If you go there now, you will see that they have started work,” Wike stated.
  • The minister emphasised that road contracts should not be politicised at the expense of public welfare. “We cannot continue to play politics when it comes to the welfare of the people. That road has been terminated,” he said.

Wike also disclosed that the road from Kubwa to Bwari has been awarded, with work already underway, providing an alternative route for commuters. During the inspection at the Karu site, he assured a shop owner affected by demolition that the government would provide adequate compensation while stressing that public interest takes priority over emotions.

  • “You cannot block water channels. While we are sympathetic and willing to provide compensation, we must allow water to flow freely to prevent flooding in the area. Sometimes we must act beyond emotions,” he said.

The minister commended the warm reception he received from residents, interpreting it as a sign of public satisfaction with the government’s development efforts. “What makes the government feel relaxed is when the people are happy. The very essence of governance is to make people happy and provide what improves their lives,” he added.

Wike also announced that the ongoing road projects would be commissioned during President Bola Tinubu’s third-anniversary celebration. He confirmed that the FCTA would not award new contracts in 2026 but would focus on completing existing projects, citing the political year as a reason to prioritise delivery.

“In 2026, we are not likely to initiate any new projects. We want to ensure that the projects we started this year are fully completed for the benefit of all,” he said.
