Wike Apologises to Tinubu After Rivers Women Walk Out on First Lady at Empowerment Programme.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike,

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has tendered an unreserved apology to President Bola Tinubu and his wife, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, following a dramatic walkout by some Rivers State women during an empowerment event held in Port Harcourt.

The event, which was organised under the Renewed Hope Initiative, aimed to empower 500 women across the state. However, it was marred by controversy when a group of women, reportedly loyal to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, staged a walkout after being allegedly sidelined from the programme list. These women, including some sacked local government vice-chairmen, were said to have been replaced by loyalists of Wike, leading to tensions at the venue.

Reacting to the incident, Wike, who is currently on an official visit to China, expressed deep regret over what he termed a “show of shame.” Through a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the former Rivers governor condemned the women’s action, describing it as an embarrassment to the people of Rivers State and an insult to the offices of the President and First Lady.

“As for me and those who subscribe to my leadership, we condemn in totality yesterday’s show of shame, and we apologise to our First Lady for the embarrassing conduct of those few women who do not represent the character and ideals of the people of Rivers State,” the statement read.

Wike did not stop at condemnation. He went further to accuse Governor Fubara of sponsoring the protest, alleging that such political “shenanigans” only serve to disrupt peace in the state rather than foster it. He called on the governor to be honest about his intentions and to clearly communicate his demands to President Tinubu, rather than engage in actions that contradict his supposed peace efforts.

“It is not enough to be visiting people to plead for peace; those who genuinely want peace must work and act for it. These are the same people pleading for peace, yet doing things contrary to their words,” Wike said. “How can you claim to want peace and at the same time sponsor people to insult everyone, including the President and his wife?”

Wike’s strong reaction underscores the deepening rift between him and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara, whose leadership style and political alliances have continued to clash with that of the former governor.

The incident has drawn wide reactions across Rivers State and the nation, with many expressing concern over the lingering political tensions that continue to overshadow governance and public programmes in the state.
