Why We Defected to APC — Oborevwori, Okowa, and Top PDP Stakeholders Break Silence.

In a stunning political development, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and several top-ranking PDP stakeholders have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement came on Wednesday after a high-profile stakeholders meeting held at the Government House, Asaba, marking a seismic shift in Delta State’s political dynamics.

A Strategic Political Move

Addressing the press, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Delta State’s Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, stated that the defection was the result of careful consultations aimed at aligning the state with a more development-driven political platform.

“The political temperature has changed — the taste of the palm wine has changed — and we must adjust our drinking pattern accordingly,” Aniagwu noted.

“This decision ensures that Delta State remains on a path of development, security, and growth. Remaining in the PDP under current conditions would only stall our progress.”

Internal Crisis Within PDP Sparked Exit

Former Senator for Delta South and pioneer PDP Chairman in the state, Senator James Manager, expressed that the decision was not made lightly but was necessary due to lingering internal issues within the PDP.

“This is an emotional day for me. I’ve been with PDP since inception. But when a ship is sinking, you don’t stay on board out of sentiment,” he said.

Powerful Political Figures in Attendance

The defection was backed by several powerful figures, including:

  • Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme
  • Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa
  • Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor
  • Members of the National and State Assemblies
  • Commissioners, Local Government Chairmen, and other political stakeholders

Delta State Politics Rewritten

This landmark move marks the first time since 1999 that a sitting Delta State governor and former governor have collectively dumped the PDP for another party. Political analysts view this as a realignment of forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As Delta transitions from a traditional PDP stronghold to an APC-led administration, all eyes are on the state’s political future and what this means for governance, development, and party politics in the South-South region.
