Black Queens Win Dramatic Shootout to Finish Third in Casablanca
Ghana’s Black Queens claimed the bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a nail-biting 4-3 penalty shootout win over defending champions South Africa on Friday evening.
The intense third-place playoff, held at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, ended 1-1 in regulation time, forcing the game to be decided by penalties.
South Africa Strike First, Ghana Equalize
South Africa took the lead just before the halftime whistle, with Nonhlanhla Mthandi finding the back of the net in the 45th minute.
Ghana responded after the break, when a mistake by goalkeeper Andile Dlamini led to an own goal in the 68th minute, levelling the score and setting up a tense finale.
Penalty Shootout Seals Ghana’s Redemption
In the resulting penalty shootout, Ghana converted four of their five spot kicks, with successful efforts from:

- J. Cudjoe
- N. Amoh

South Africa’s L. Motlhalo, B. Mbane, and J. Seoposenwe scored their penalties, but misses from S. Holweni and H. Magaia handed victory to Ghana.
A Familiar Result for the Black Queens
This victory mirrors Ghana’s performance at the 2016 WAFCON, where they also defeated South Africa to secure third place, winning 1-0 in Yaoundé.
Friday’s win is a sweet revenge for Ghana, which lost 2-0 to South Africa in the group stage of the same tournament.
