Video: Makurdi Protest Erupts as Youths Block Roads Over Benue Massacre.

Tensions rose in Benue State on Sunday morning as angry youths staged a massive protest in Makurdi, the state capital, over the gruesome killing of over 200 people in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area.

The protesters, mostly young people, barricaded the Wurukum Roundabout, a major traffic hub connecting northern and southern Nigeria, causing serious gridlock and leaving commuters stranded for hours.

The demonstration comes in response to last week’s deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen on rural communities, which claimed hundreds of lives—most of them internally displaced persons sheltered by a local Catholic mission.

Defying official warnings against public gatherings, the demonstrators demanded justice for the victims, accusing the Nigerian government of neglecting Benue’s security and failing to protect Christian communities from constant attacks.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of tension and chaos as protesters blocked key access roads, chanted for peace and justice, and called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to act immediately.

  • “We’re tired of watching our people die while the government does nothing,” one of the protesters said. “We need security, not empty promises.”

This latest protest highlights the growing frustration among Nigerian youth over insecurity, recurring violence in the Middle Belt, and the perceived silence of federal authorities.

The demonstration remained peaceful, but police presence increased around the protest zone, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.
