Resident doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Akwa Ibom State have embarked on a seven-day warning strike to protest unresolved salary arrears and welfare issues with the hospital management.

The strike, which began on Monday, October 6, 2025, was declared after an emergency general meeting of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), UUTH chapter.

In a communiqué released after the meeting and made available to journalists in Uyo on Wednesday, the association stated that the industrial action became necessary after several appeals to management failed to produce any meaningful results.

The communiqué was jointly signed by the ARD President, Dr. Promise Jacob, and General Secretary, Dr. Enam-Eti Akpan.

The resident doctors demanded the immediate implementation of the correct CONMESS entry level for newly employed doctors, the reissuance of appointment letters reflecting the appropriate levels, and the payment of salary shortfalls and arrears owed to some members since 2023.

They also called for the payment of three affected members who missed biometric capture through the GIFMIS platform, pending correction on the IPPIS platform.

  • “Payment of salary arrears owed the 2023 batch of employed residents and the urgent employment of additional resident doctors across all departments to address manpower shortages and workplace burnout are long overdue,” the communiqué read.

The association further demanded the renovation and maintenance of the House Officers’ Quarters and Call Rooms, which they described as being in poor condition.

The ARD warned that at the end of the seven-day warning strike, an Emergency General Meeting would be convened to review the hospital management’s response and decide on the next line of action.
