The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reassured Nigerians that visa and passport services will not be disrupted, even as the US government undergoes a partial shutdown.
In a notice shared via its official X handle on Wednesday, the embassy explained that while its social media updates would be limited during the shutdown, consular services would continue as scheduled.

- “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume, except for urgent safety and security information. At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue as the situation permits,” the statement read.
The clarification came amid rising concerns from Nigerians, especially students and travelers, who feared the shutdown in Washington might affect visa processing and travel plans.
The shutdown, which began after US lawmakers and President Donald Trump failed to reach a budget deal, has forced several federal agencies to suspend operations. The dispute is reportedly linked to disagreements over health care funding, a key demand by Democrats, which Republicans opposed.

While essential services such as the military, postal service, Social Security, and food stamp programmes remain active, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that about 750,000 federal workers could face unpaid furloughs until a funding deal is reached.
This is the first US government shutdown since the record 35-day closure nearly seven years ago during Trump’s first term. Since 1976, America has experienced 21 shutdowns, usually caused by last-minute budget standoffs between Congress and the White House.
The US Embassy advised Nigerians seeking updates on visa and passport services to regularly check travel.state.gov for the latest information.
