The United States government has approved $32.5 million in aid to Nigeria in a bid to tackle worsening hunger and food insecurity, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria announced on Wednesday.
This rare approval comes years after former U.S. President Donald Trump suspended most aid programs through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
Focus of the Aid
The funding will support internally displaced persons (IDPs) in conflict-affected regions of Nigeria by providing:
- Food assistance
- Nutritional support for vulnerable families
- Electronic food vouchers for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children
- Specifically, 764,205 beneficiaries across Nigeria’s northeast and northwest will be reached, including:
- 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls
- 43,235 children with complementary nutrition support
Hunger Crisis in Nigeria
Insecurity and funding shortfalls have triggered what humanitarian experts describe as an “unprecedented hunger crisis” in northern Nigeria.
According to Margot van der Velden, the World Food Program’s (WFP) Regional Director for West Africa, over 1.3 million people risk going without food, while more than 150 nutrition clinics in Borno State face possible closure.

Earlier in July, the WFP had suspended food assistance across crisis-hit countries in West and Central Africa due to massive global aid cuts, warning that food stocks would run out by September 2025.
Rising Violence Intensifying Hunger
Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats:
Insurgency in the northeast has killed around 35,000 civilians and displaced over 2 million people, according to UN reports.
Farmer-herder clashes and violent attacks in the northwest and north-central regions have worsened food shortages. In June, at least 150 people were killed in a single attack in north-central Nigeria.
The U.S. donation is expected to serve as a lifeline to the most vulnerable populations in Nigeria, helping prevent further deterioration of the hunger crisis.
