President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured the victorious Super Falcons and their technical crew with national awards, luxury apartments, and significant cash rewards following their historic win at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Each of the 24 players has been conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and awarded a three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Housing Estate, Abuja. Additionally, they will receive the equivalent of $100,000 in naira each. Members of the 11-man technical crew were also honoured and will receive $50,000 each in Naira equivalent.

The recognition was presented during a grand reception hosted by the President at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

  • “You have inspired millions, especially young girls who now see that their dreams are valid and achievable,” Tinubu said. “You’ve inspired me, too. This country is proud of you—you represent the hope of today and the promise of tomorrow.”

President Tinubu also reflected on the tension during the final match, stating, “I didn’t want to watch the match at first. But when we were 2-0 down, I became restless. Then came the comeback—it lifted not just my spirit, but that of the entire nation.”

He humorously added that the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was so caught up in the match that she nearly abandoned dinner preparations.

In a powerful show of national appreciation, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced a ₦10 million donation to each player and crew member on behalf of the 36 state governors.

The First Lady praised the Super Falcons as “shining examples of courage and excellence,” saying, “Your zeal and confidence on the pitch were nothing short of inspirational. You reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football.”

She added that she told the President earlier in the day that the Super Falcons would win the World Cup someday—an ambition echoed by Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who declared the WAFCON title a victory for “every Nigerian girl who dreams of greatness.”

Ajibade said, “This victory isn’t just about a trophy. It represents the unyielding Nigerian spirit. It’s for every young girl in our towns, villages, and cities who dares to dream.”

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the victory as a symbol of national unity and praised the Tinubu administration for its investment in sports and youth development.

  • “This win goes beyond football—it’s a symbol of what is possible when belief, courage, and unity come together,” Dikko said.

Earlier, the team and their coaches were received by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, ahead of their formal welcome by the President and the First Lady. Their convoy arrived at the Villa shortly before 4:36 p.m.

The Super Falcons’ remarkable 3-2 comeback victory over the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco in the final sealed their 10th WAFCON title, adding to previous wins in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.

In a video call with the team on match night, Tinubu had congratulated MVP and captain Ajibade and praised the team’s resilience after coming from behind to win.

“You’ve made Nigeria proud. This is just the beginning,” the President concluded.
