Fifty pupils of St. Mary Private Primary and Secondary Schools in Niger State have successfully escaped from their abductors and returned safely to their families, the Niger State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, announced on Sunday.
The revelation came after Bishop Yohanna and his aides visited the homes of the rescued children. Despite this positive development, a significant number of students remain in captivity. According to the bishop, the school currently has 236 pupils, three children of staff members, 14 secondary students, and 12 staff members still held by the abductors.

- “As of Sunday, 23rd November 2025, we have received encouraging news: fifty pupils have escaped and safely reunited with their parents. This is a relief following the recent abduction of 303 students and pupils by suspected terrorists,” Bishop Yohanna said.
He provided further details, noting that out of 430 enrolled primary pupils, 377 are boarders and 53 are day students. Excluding the 50 who escaped, 141 pupils were never abducted.
While expressing gratitude for the escape of the 50 children, Bishop Yohanna called on the public to continue praying for the remaining captives and urged calm among parents and communities.

- “Although we rejoice over the escape of fifty pupils, we continue to pray for the safe return of all abductees. We remain committed to collaborating with security agencies, community leaders, and government authorities to ensure their quick and safe release. May the Lord protect all the children and bring them home safely,” he added.
The Niger State Police Command has yet to provide an official comment. NAIJABLOGDAILY recalls that the incident, which involved 315 persons, including pupils, students, and teachers, occurred at the St. Mary school in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, last Friday. Following the abduction, Governor Mohammed Bago ordered the closure of schools across the state on Saturday as a precautionary measure.
