The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away at the age of 90, marking the end of a brief but historic reign.

NAIJABLOGDAILY gathered that the revered monarch died in the early hours of Monday, amid celebrations marking both his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation.

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in July 2024, following the death of Oba Lekan Balogun. His reign was notable for being the second Olubadan to rule from the new ultra-modern palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan.

Palace Sources Confirm Passing

A senior source within the Olubadan-in-Council confirmed the development to our correspondent in Ibadan:

• “We received the message that the paramount ruler passed away this morning. He has joined his forefathers. Although an official announcement from the state government is still being awaited.”

Another palace source also disclosed that Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja—a former governor of Oyo State and next in line to the throne—is currently out of the country but is expected to return shortly.

“We are expecting Oba Rashidi Ladoja back in Nigeria soon. He must have already been briefed,” the source added.

What Happens Next?

With the passing of Oba Olakulehin, attention now turns to the traditional succession system, which will see the Otun line produce the next Olubadan. As the highest-ranking chief in the Otun line, Rashidi Ladoja is widely expected to become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland upon his return.

• The Oyo State Government is expected to officially announce the monarch’s passing in the coming hours, after which funeral arrangements and succession protocols will follow.
