UPDATED: Borno Mourns as Boko Haram Attacks Kill 30, Including Women and Children.

Borno State is in mourning following a fresh wave of deadly attacks by Boko Haram terrorists, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 30 persons across Chibok and Kala Balge on Monday.

In Chibok Local Government Area, 14 persons, including seven mourners, were gunned down during a third-day prayer for a late community leader around 6 p.m. Gunmen believed to be Boko Haram insurgents stormed the area, opened fire on the gathering, and set multiple homes ablaze. The death toll rose as more bodies were recovered from the scene.

On the same day, a devastating IED explosion near Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge LGA, claimed the lives of at least 16 commuters, including six children and four women, when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device planted by suspected terrorists. The victims were en route to Gamboru Ngala, a border town near Lake Chad.

Members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who responded to the explosion confirmed that three other passengers, including a child, sustained severe injuries and were evacuated for urgent medical treatment.

Kala Balge, a remote border region with no major access roads, remains vulnerable due to its isolation and proximity to terrorist strongholds.

Speaking during a security briefing with federal government officials, including the Ministers of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff, Governor Babagana Zulum condemned Nigeria’s porous borders, which he says enable terrorist regrouping and unchecked attacks in Borno.

“These attackers exploit our weak borderlines to move freely. Until we secure our borders, no one is safe,” Zulum emphasized.

The twin attacks come just 72 hours after 14 farmers and two CJTF operatives were killed in Gwoza, and a day after 10 CJTF members were ambushed and killed between Hawul (Borno) and Garkida (Adamawa).

The renewed wave of violence has once again highlighted the fragile state of security in North-East Nigeria, where Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists continue to pose a significant threat to lives and livelihoods.
