UNILAG Denies Withholding 2025 Post-UTME Results Amid Student Complaints.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has dismissed allegations that it withheld results from candidates who sat for its 2025 Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME), insisting that all results have been fully released.

The clarification comes after Lagos-based law firm F.K. Nnadi & Co. issued pre-action notices to both UNILAG and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), accusing them of awarding unjustifiably low scores and withholding some results without explanation.

In an official statement signed by Mrs. V. Abesede Wickliffe, Registrar and Secretary to Council, UNILAG emphasized that no candidate’s result was withheld.

  • “Please be informed that there is currently no case of ‘withheld’ 2025 Post-UTME results at the University of Lagos. All results have been duly released to candidates, and those disqualified on grounds of examination malpractice have been appropriately notified,” the statement read.

The university explained that internal investigations flagged some cases of examination malpractice, which led to the disqualification of certain candidates. These outcomes, it added, were publicly communicated through its official Information Bulletin.

UNILAG further stressed that admission into the institution remains provisional and subject to compliance with academic and ethical standards.

Meanwhile, F.K. Nnadi & Co. has petitioned the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education, demanding intervention. The law firm gave OAU three months and UNILAG 30 days to release the contested results and allow accused candidates to defend themselves.

The controversy gained further attention after Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, claimed that both universities used the same Post-UTME software, which allegedly contained bugs that mismatched scores and wrongly flagged students for malpractice. He said more than 752 complaints had been recorded, calling for an independent audit.

However, UNILAG rejected suggestions of a technical fault. Its spokesperson, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, maintained that all flagged cases were clear breaches of examination guidelines, supported by video surveillance and monitoring evidence.

This development adds to a string of controversies in Nigeria’s education sector in 2025. In May, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admitted to a technical glitch affecting over 370,000 candidates, while the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) also faced backlash after suspending its online result checker.
