UK Rejects Nigeria’s Request to Transfer Ike Ekweremadu.

The United Kingdom has rejected a request from the Nigerian government to allow former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu to serve the remainder of his prison sentence in Nigeria.

Ekweremadu is currently serving nine years and eight months in a UK prison following his 2023 conviction for conspiring to harvest the kidney of a young man—a case that drew international attention.

The Nigerian government, through Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, recently approached officials at the UK Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to discuss transferring Ekweremadu so he could complete his sentence in Nigeria. However, according to The Guardian UK, the MoJ confirmed that the request was denied.

The UK government reportedly expressed concerns over whether Nigeria could guarantee that Ekweremadu would serve out his sentence if deported. A source was quoted as saying:

  • “The UK will not tolerate modern slavery and any offender will face the full force of UK law.”

As a result, Ekweremadu will remain in the UK to complete his prison term.

Meanwhile, his wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, who was sentenced to four years and six months, with half of the term spent in custody, was released earlier this year and has since returned to Nigeria.
