The United States government has imposed new restrictions on Iranian officials attending the United Nations summit in New York, barring them from purchasing luxury items and bulk household goods during their stay.

According to a notice published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, Iranian diplomats and visiting officials will no longer be allowed access to wholesale retailers such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.

The order also requires that Iranian officials obtain special permission from the U.S. State Department before purchasing luxury products. Restricted items include watches, electronics, and fountain pens valued at more than $1,000, as well as vehicles costing over $60,000.

State Department spokesman Thomas Pigott defended the move, describing it as part of Washington’s broader “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.

• “We will not allow the Iranian regime’s clerical elites to have a shopping spree in New York while the Iranian people endure poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and dire shortages of water and electricity,” Pigott said.

The sanctions come against the backdrop of escalating U.S.-Iran tensions. Iran’s economy remains battered by American sanctions that have severely reduced oil exports and restricted imports of essential goods.

Since taking office earlier this year, President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Tehran, including ordering bomb and missile strikes on three nuclear facilities in June, a move that worsened already-strained relations.

Analysts say the latest measure is largely symbolic, aimed at curbing the activities of Iranian officials in the U.S. while reinforcing Washington’s determination to diplomatically and economically isolate Iran’s leadership.
