Trump Sets Condition to Extend TikTok Divestment Deadline Amid U.S.-China Tensions.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he may extend the June 19, 2025, deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest its U.S. TikTok assets — but only if a deal to sell the app is still in progress.

Speaking in an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press with Kristen Welker, Trump revealed he has a “sweet spot” for TikTok, which he credited for helping him connect with younger voters during the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

“TikTok is very interesting, but it will be protected,” Trump said. “I would like to see the deal done, and if needed, I would consider extending the deadline.”

In April, Trump had already extended the original deadline by two months and 15 days to give more time for a potential sale. However, negotiations reportedly fell apart due to Trump’s tough stance on China, including increased tariffs.

While ByteDance scrambles to find a non-Chinese buyer for TikTok’s U.S. operations, Trump’s latest comments suggest that another reprieve is not guaranteed. “There may not be a need for another extension,” he added, hinting at a stricter approach if talks continue to stall.

The future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain, especially as national security concerns and political tensions between the U.S. and China continue to shape tech policy.
