Two US National Guard soldiers were critically wounded on Wednesday, just two blocks from the White House, in what President Donald Trump has described as an “act of terror.” Police confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody.
Speaking about the incident, Trump condemned the attack as “a heinous assault, an act of evil, an act of hatred and an act of terror.” He also stated that the perpetrator was a migrant from Afghanistan and vowed that his administration would “reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan” during the Biden administration.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem urged the public to pray for the injured soldiers, saying on X (formerly Twitter):
- “Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington DC.”

AFP reporters near Farragut Square, a busy area near the White House and a subway station, described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing people fleeing the scene. Local authorities confirmed that emergency services responded quickly and transported three gunshot victims to hospitals.
Trump, who is currently in Florida, was briefed on the situation and described the shooting suspect as “an animal” who will “pay a very steep price,” according to a post on his Truth Social platform.
Witnesses reported seeing National Guard soldiers moving with their weapons drawn as civilians evacuated the area. Angela Perry, who was in her car with her two children, said:
- “We heard gunshots. You could see National Guard running toward the metro with their weapons drawn.”

The shooting comes amid Trump’s controversial domestic deployment of National Guard troops to cities like Washington, Los Angeles, and Memphis to combat crime and enforce policies on undocumented migrants. Last week, a federal judge ruled that Trump’s deployment of thousands of troops in the US capital was unlawful, while similar actions in Los Angeles earlier this year had been legally challenged by California authorities.
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and authorities continue to secure the area around the White House.
