Former United States President Donald Trump has announced that he intends to permanently ban immigration from Nigeria and all countries classified as “Third World,” a move he says is aimed at restructuring America’s immigration system.
Trump revealed this in a statement posted on Truth Social late on Thanksgiving Day, declaring that immigration from these nations would be paused indefinitely to allow the U.S. system to “recover” and to reverse what he claimed were “millions of Joe Biden illegal admissions.”

He further stated that the U.S. would remove anyone living in the country who is not a “net asset” or is “incapable of loving” the nation, signalling a major shake-up in immigration policy.
Citing data from the World Population Review, Trump noted that over 60 countries across Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, including Nigeria, fall into the Third World category based on human capital rankings.
His announcement came shortly after confirming the death of Sarah Beckstrom, a West Virginia National Guard member who was reportedly shot near the White House. Authorities identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national.
In a related development, the Director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a review of all previously issued green cards to individuals from countries considered “of concern,” following Trump’s directive.
When contacted for clarification, a USCIS official referred CNN to a list of 19 countries highlighted in a June presidential proclamation. These nations include:
- Afghanistan
- Burma
- Chad
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Eritrea
- Haiti
- Iran
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sudan

Trump’s declaration has sparked global reactions, especially from countries likely to be affected, as the policy could reshape U.S. immigration pathways and international relations in the coming years.
