The Nigerian media space has been hit with grief following the shocking death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a vibrant news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was brutally killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.
Fondly called “Sommie” by friends and colleagues, Maduagwu was attacked in the early hours of Monday. She was only 29 years old.
In a statement confirming the heartbreaking incident, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE family” whose voice always “engaged and connected with our viewers.” The media house further mourned:
- “Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

The Nigerian Police have since launched an investigation into the killing.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer before transitioning into journalism, where she rose quickly as one of the brightest young talents on Nigerian television. She was admired for her warm personality, professionalism, and strong storytelling ability that resonated with viewers.
Her untimely death has left colleagues and media practitioners across Nigeria in mourning, with many describing it as a huge loss to journalism and the nation at large.
