The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has explained why President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was unable to personally visit Abia State on Friday, clarifying that his absence was due to the burial ceremony of Nana Lydia Yilwatda, the late mother of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
President Tinubu was initially scheduled to commission several key projects executed by Governor Alex Otti, but was represented at the event by Umahi.

Following the President’s absence, some members of opposition parties in Abia reportedly celebrated on social media, claiming Tinubu’s failure to attend was a sign of neglect. However, Umahi swiftly dismissed such insinuations, emphasizing that the President’s absence was purely out of respect for the deceased and her family.
- “The President asked me to let you know that he will be with you later this year, sometime in December,” Umahi told the crowd during the event.
- “He would have been here himself, but unfortunately, our National Chairman lost his mother, and she is being buried tomorrow (Saturday). It is only proper that the President attends. That is why he asked me to stand in for him.”
Delivering Tinubu’s message, Umahi conveyed the President’s commendation to Governor Alex Otti for the progress achieved under his administration, particularly in infrastructure renewal and road rehabilitation across the state.
- “The President appreciates the transformation happening in Abia under Governor Otti’s leadership. He congratulates you on these achievements and assures the people of Abia that the Federal Government will continue to support genuine development efforts,” Umahi stated.

Among the projects commissioned during the visit were the Port Harcourt Road, Ohanku Road, Ajiwe Street, Ndoki Road by East, Peoples Road, Gabriel Nwosu Road, Nkoro Road, Umuatako Road, and the Michael Okpara Auditorium — all of which were recently completed under the Abia State Government.
Umahi also reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to collaboration with all state governments, regardless of political affiliation, to ensure nationwide infrastructural growth and improved living standards for Nigerians.
- “President Tinubu believes in results, not politics. Wherever there is progress, he will support it,” Umahi concluded.
