President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to rise above religious and ethnic divisions, stressing the importance of peace, love, and unity for national growth and development.

The President made the call on Saturday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, during the funeral service of Nana Lydia Yilwatda, the late mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

Speaking at the solemn event, Tinubu emphasized the need for religious tolerance and mutual respect among citizens of diverse faiths, noting that love and compassion are what truly define humanity.

  • “I inherited Islam from my family; I didn’t change, but my wife is a pastor and she prays for me all the time,” Tinubu said.
  • “I have never tried to convince or convert her because I believe in freedom of religion. We are praying and answerable to the same Almighty God, and we will account to Him for our deeds and character.
  • “Our love for others is what truly matters; we must learn to live together as one people.”

The President’s message drew applause from attendees, who described it as a timely reminder of Nigeria’s need for unity amid rising divisions.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, who also spoke at the event, commended President Tinubu for taking time out of his busy schedule to honor the deceased. He noted that the state government is intensifying efforts to restore peace and security in Plateau State.

  • “Insecurity has been a major setback for our development, but we are working tirelessly to promote harmony and peaceful coexistence across all communities,” the governor stated.

In his tribute, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda described his late mother as a pillar of strength, a humble servant of humanity, and a woman of faith who lived a life of sacrifice and compassion.

Yilwatda expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, state governors, members of the National Assembly, and all Nigerians who stood by his family during their period of grief.

Late Nana Lydia Yilwatda, aged 83, was laid to rest in Dungung, Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State.
