President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the shocking death of Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a promising Arise News Television anchor, who was killed following a violent robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the 29-year-old journalist as “a brilliant and promising professional whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner.”
Tinubu extended condolences to the Maduagwu family, the management and staff of Arise News Television, and the wider Nigerian media community, noting that her death was “not only a personal tragedy but also a national loss.”
The President has directed security agencies to launch a thorough probe and ensure the perpetrators of the robbery are arrested and brought to justice without delay.
- “Security and law enforcement agencies should conduct a quick and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice without delay,” the statement read.
Shocking details of Sommie’s death emerge
Reports from her colleagues on Arise News’ Morning Show suggest that Sommie’s death may have been preventable.
Co-anchors Ojy Okpe and Reuben Abati revealed that after learning that 14 armed robbers had invaded her building, Sommie attempted to escape by jumping from her home. Although she survived the fall, she later died after allegedly being denied medical treatment at a hospital.
Okpe lamented:
- “She jumped down from her home when she heard that 14 armed robbers had come to her house. She did not die on the spot. She was taken to the hospital, but she was rejected. This really is a tragic incident. Sommie’s life could have been saved, but the hospital refused to treat her.”
