Senator Chris Ekpenyong, a founding father of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has raised alarm over the increasing wave of defections from the opposition party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
NaijaBlogDaily reports that the defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Sir Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to the APC has thrown the PDP into turmoil, deepening fears about the party’s future.
In an interview with Vanguard on Saturday, Ekpenyong, who served as Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State from 1999 to 2007, predicted that Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom may soon follow suit and defect to the APC.
Ekpenyong lamented that President Bola Tinubu has effectively “captured” the PDP, weakening its ability to challenge the ruling party. According to him, the decision of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to contest again on the PDP platform has triggered dissatisfaction and disunity within the party, leading key stakeholders to seek alliances elsewhere.
He stated, “Tinubu has killed the PDP. I’m sure Akwa Ibom may follow soon. Everybody wanted former VP Atiku to clearly state that he wasn’t going to contest, but his persistence has forced people to make their own decisions. This is dividing the North and the South.”

Ekpenyong expressed concern over the party’s survival, questioning how the PDP could rebuild itself to pose any real threat to the APC in future elections.
He further criticized past PDP leadership decisions, blaming the decline on the early mistake of handing over too much control to state governors. “That was the mistake the founding fathers, like Obasanjo, made. Obasanjo seized the party. The only ones who stood up to him were the late Chief Sunday Awoniyi and former Vice President Alex Ekwueme,” he added.
