The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major trade and agricultural partnership with Brazil, expected to create 100,000 direct jobs and more than five million indirect jobs across Nigeria.

According to Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Public Communication to the President, the new initiative, known as the Green Imperative Partnership (GIP), is a $1.1 billion economic cooperation project designed to boost food security, modernise agricultural mechanisation, and expand bilateral trade between Nigeria and Brazil.

In his statement, Dare noted that trade between the two nations has declined sharply over the past decade, falling from $9 billion to just $1.6 billion in 2023, with 2024 figures still below $2 billion. Brazil’s main exports to Nigeria include machinery and poultry, while Nigeria exports oil, cocoa, urea, and sesame to Brazil.

Despite this contraction, Dare stressed that Nigeria’s non-oil exports are beginning to gain traction in the Brazilian market, citing that in October 2024 alone, Nigeria’s non-oil exports hit $0.62 billion, with Brazil accounting for over 20% of the total.

  • Highlighting the targets ahead, Dare explained that both countries are committed to increasing trade volumes to $2 billion in the short term, with a long-term goal of reaching $3.5 billion by 2030.
  • The Green Imperative Partnership will see Brazil supply 10,000 tractors and 50,000 pieces of equipment, all to be assembled in Nigeria, thereby boosting local production capacity and employment opportunities.

He also revealed that Brazilian companies like Petrobras and Embraer are exploring investments in energy and aviation, while a new BASA Agreement for a direct flight route between Nigeria and Brazil is being finalised. This, he added, would improve connectivity, reduce costs, and unlock fresh opportunities in trade, tourism, and investment.
