President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a nationwide security emergency and ordered an immediate expansion of Nigeria’s security forces in response to the growing wave of insecurity, terrorism, and banditry across the country.
In a statement released from the State House, the President directed the Nigeria Police Force to recruit 20,000 additional officers, raising the total number of planned new police recruits to 50,000 personnel.
He also authorised the temporary use of NYSC camps as police training centres to fast-track the recruitment and deployment process.
According to the President:
- “In view of the escalating security challenges, I am declaring a national security emergency. The police and the military are hereby authorised to immediately recruit additional personnel.
The Nigeria Police Force will add 20,000 officers, bringing the total recruitment number to 50,000 nationwide.”
Tinubu further noted that while police training facilities across the country are currently being upgraded, the authorities are now permitted to convert NYSC orientation camps into training depots to accelerate preparation and deployment.
He added that officers withdrawn from VIP protection duties will undergo special retraining before being sent to frontline areas battling bandits, terrorists, and violent criminals.
Deployment of Forest Guards and Strengthening of DSS Operations
The President also empowered the Department of State Services (DSS) to deploy trained forest guards to combat criminal elements hiding in Nigeria’s forests. He ordered the recruitment of more tactical operatives to reinforce these operations.
- “This is a national emergency,” Tinubu said. “We are deploying more boots on the ground, especially in high-risk zones. Every Nigerian must support ongoing efforts to secure our nation.”
Commendation for Security Agencies
Tinubu praised security operatives for recent successful missions, including the rescue of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and 38 worshippers in Kwara State.
He assured citizens that the government is intensifying efforts to free schoolchildren still being held hostage in Niger State.
He also paid tribute to fallen heroes, including Brigadier-General Musa Uba, acknowledging their sacrifice in the fight against terrorism.
Call for State Police and Stronger Local Security
The President urged the National Assembly to review relevant laws to enable states to establish state police, especially in areas with persistent insecurity.
He also encouraged local councils, religious institutions, mosques, and churches to strengthen their security arrangements, particularly in vulnerable regions.
Livestock Ministry, Ranching, and Ending Farmer-Herder Conflicts
Highlighting the purpose of the newly established Livestock Ministry, Tinubu appealed to herders to:
