President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Europe to commence a 10-day working vacation, the Presidency announced on Thursday.
According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will spend the vacation between France and the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria.
- “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today, September 4, to commence a working vacation in Europe, as part of his 2025 annual leave. The vacation will last 10 working days. He will spend the period between France and the UK and then return to the country,” the statement read.
No Formal Handover to the Vice President
The announcement, however, made no reference to the President transmitting a formal letter to the National Assembly in line with Section 145(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which would empower Vice President Kashim Shettima to act in his absence. Both chambers of the Assembly are currently on recess.
Observers recall that in October 2024, Tinubu also embarked on a similar two-week “working vacation” in the UK and France without formally handing over to his deputy.
Tinubu’s Extensive Foreign Trips
Since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has become one of Nigeria’s most travelled leaders. NAIJABLOGDAILY reported in October 2024 that within his first 17 months in office, Tinubu and Vice President Shettima undertook 41 trips across 26 countries, collectively spending 180 days abroad. Of this, Tinubu alone logged 124 days on 29 foreign trips to 16 countries.
His most recent engagement was in Brazil in August 2025, where he met President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Both leaders signed agreements on trade, aviation, energy, and security cooperation, including discussions to restore Petrobras’ operations in Nigeria and establish a Lagos–São Paulo direct air route.

Earlier, Tinubu’s international travels took him to the United States, France, the United Kingdom, China, South Africa, Germany, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Saint Lucia, Ghana, and Japan for summits, state visits, and bilateral talks aimed at boosting investment and diplomatic ties.
Mixed Reactions at Home
While the Presidency insists that Tinubu’s travels are vital for securing foreign investments and strengthening Nigeria’s global presence, critics argue that the frequent trips have produced limited economic benefits. Many citizens continue to grapple with rising inflation, worsening insecurity, and declining living standards, fueling debates over the cost and impact of the President’s extensive foreign engagements.
