Terrorism Trial: Finnish Prosecutors Seek Six-Year Jail Term for Pro-Biafran Agitator Simon Ekpa.

Simon Ekpa, a prominent pro-Biafran agitator, is facing terrorism charges in Finland, with prosecutors pushing for a six-year prison sentence if he is found guilty.

Ekpa, who has been under investigation for his alleged role in inciting violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, appeared at the Päijät-Häme District Court on Friday for a preparatory hearing related to terrorism allegations, according to Finnish news outlet Yle.

The Finnish prosecutor, Sampsa Hakala, told the court that there is substantial digital evidence linking Ekpa to terror-related activities.

“We have a great deal of evidence regarding this individual’s online activity and communications,” Hakala stated.

Investigators claim Ekpa used social media platforms to promote violence, target civilians, and issue orders to followers in Nigeria, especially within the South-East.

In addition to terrorism, Ekpa is also being investigated for aggravated tax fraud and the alleged procurement of weapons for pro-Biafra groups.

However, his defense lawyer, Kaarle Gummerus, dismissed the charges, questioning the credibility of evidence obtained from Nigerian sources.

Ekpa, who describes himself as the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was earlier remanded in custody on charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

The case is part of a joint investigation by Finnish authorities and the Nigerian government, following his arrest in November 2024, alongside four others. He is accused of being involved in terrorist financing, incitement to violence, and using his online platforms to fuel unrest in Nigeria.

The court proceedings are still ongoing, and the final ruling is expected in the coming months.
