The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kebbi State is facing a wave of internal unrest following the defection of three high-profile senators to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) on Tuesday officially announced their switch to the APC on the floor of the Senate, citing the collapse of internal democracy, marginalisation of loyal party members, and the PDP’s failure to tackle insecurity as their reasons for leaving.
PDP Shocked by Lawmakers’ Exit
The defections, particularly that of political heavyweights Aliero and Abdullahi, came as a surprise to many within the party’s ranks. Senator Maidoki’s departure, seen as a major blow to the PDP’s grassroots support in the southern zone, has deepened anxiety across the party structure.
According to party insiders who spoke with Naija Blog Daily, the lawmakers gave little indication of their intentions before making the move public.
“This was not expected. It’s a hard hit,” one party source said.
Charged Atmosphere at PDP Secretariat
When Naija Blog Daily visited the PDP Secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, the atmosphere was tense. Groups of party loyalists were seen discussing the matter in hushed but heated tones.
One party member, clearly agitated, snapped at inquiries from our reporter:
“Go and ask APC why they failed before. You journalists are only after headlines. Don’t come here asking me anything.”
PDP Eyes Abubakar Malami as Political Ally
In response to the crisis, Naija Blog Daily has learned that PDP leadership in Kebbi is considering reaching out to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to help rebuild the party’s base ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Malami is a political heavyweight in Kebbi. Aligning with him might be key to regaining lost ground,” a source close to the party’s top echelon revealed.
As the political landscape in Kebbi shifts dramatically, the PDP now finds itself in urgent need of strategic recalibration to stay competitive.
