A major political storm is brewing in Kano State. Rumors of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s possible return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have sparked internal revolt among party members.
Kwankwaso, the 2023 NNPP presidential candidate and former Kano State Governor, was recently expelled from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) amid a leadership crisis. Now, speculation is rife that he is planning to defect back to the APC—a move that has divided the Kano APC leadership.
At a press conference held Friday at the APC state headquarters in Kano, APC State Chairman Abdullahi Abbas confirmed the development, calling Kwankwaso’s potential return a “welcome step.”
“We are happy and pleased about it,” Abbas said. “But anyone who has previously insulted President Bola Tinubu or Vice President Kashim Shettima must apologize before returning to our party.”

Abbas also warned that the APC would not serve as a “safe haven for political failures or those under EFCC or ICPC investigation.”
“Our doors are open to all Nigerians, but we will not shield corrupt politicians or opportunists,” he added.
Despite the chairman’s openness, strong opposition is mounting within the party. Kano APC spokesman Ahmed Aruwa rejected the idea of Kwankwaso’s return in an interview with Naija Blog Daily.
“We don’t welcome him. His actions during the NNPP administration, especially the controversial demolition of shops in Kano, show he’s not acting in the people’s interest,” Aruwa said.
He emphasized that the APC had achieved victory without Kwankwaso in previous elections and could do so again.
“His return will only cause conflict. Ganduje is in APC, and we all know the history between him and Kwankwaso. Even co-wives don’t live in the same house,” Aruwa added.
Meanwhile, the NNPP in Kano insists that their members remain loyal to Kwankwaso. Kano NNPP Chairman Dr. Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa said:
“We are blind followers of Kwankwaso. Wherever he goes, we follow. But for now, we’ve only seen rumors on social media.”

Top NNPP figures like Ladipo Johnson and Buba Galadima, both close allies of Kwankwaso, have also denied any planned defection.
The NNPP is locked in an internal power struggle between Kwankwaso and the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, further complicating the former governor’s political path.
So far, Kwankwaso himself has remained silent on the swirling defection rumors. However, his past criticisms of President Tinubu and rivalry with APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje raise questions about whether his return to the APC would be politically sustainable.
