Renowned American televangelist and gospel singer Jimmy Swaggart has passed away at the age of 90 following a cardiac arrest. His death was confirmed on Tuesday via an emotional post shared on his official Instagram handle.
Quoting 2 Timothy 4:7-8, the statement read in part:
“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith… Today was the day he has sung about for decades. He met his beloved Saviour and entered the portals of glory.”
The post also urged prayers for Sister Frances Swaggart and the entire Swaggart family, including Donnie, Debbie, Gabriel, Jill, and others.
A Life of Preaching, Music, and Global Evangelism
Born on March 15, 1935, in Ferriday, Louisiana, Jimmy Swaggart experienced a powerful religious calling at the age of 8, which ultimately led him to a lifelong ministry. At 17, he married Frances Anderson, then 15, and they had a son, Donnie Swaggart.
Swaggart was ordained in 1961 by the Assemblies of God, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the U.S., and soon rose to national prominence not only for his preaching but also for his deeply emotive gospel music. He was the cousin of rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis and sold more than 17 million gospel albums worldwide.
Pioneer of Christian Broadcasting
Swaggart was a pioneer in religious media, launching his radio ministry “The Campmeeting Hour” in 1969, followed by the magazine “The Evangelist” in 1970. In 1973, he took his message to television with a 30-minute program under the Jimmy Swaggart Evangelistic Association.
- By the 1980s, Swaggart was a household name, leading massive crusades across the U.S. and abroad, including a record-breaking rally in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1987 that drew over 125,000 attendees.
Scandals and Redemption
Swaggart’s ministry faced major setbacks in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to highly publicized extramarital affairs. Though these controversies led to a temporary decline in his influence and standing within the Assemblies of God, Swaggart continued preaching independently, maintaining a loyal following through his Family Worship Center and SonLife Broadcasting Network.

- “He was not just a preacher—he was a worshiper, a warrior, and a witness to the grace and mercy of God,” the family’s tribute stated.
Swaggart is survived by his wife Frances, his son Donnie, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy continues through his family, his global ministries, and the countless lives touched by his message of salvation.
