Minister of Works, David Umahi, has urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to stop de-marketing the country, calling instead for a renewed spirit of patriotism, optimism, and national unity.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, Umahi lamented the growing culture of negativity and public criticism directed at Nigeria.

- “I feel so sad when people de-market the country both outside and inside Nigeria, cursing without knowledge,” Umahi said. “A job is very easy when you’re not the one doing it. Let there be a rethink. We all must strive to put Nigeria first, help one another, and live with the fear of God.”
The minister expressed concern that many Nigerians who obey laws and work tirelessly abroad often return home to disregard basic rules, stressing that such attitudes hinder the nation’s progress.
- “When our people travel out, they endure long hours of work, humiliation, and strict rules. But when they return, they break all the rules here. That’s not good. Let’s have hope. This is the only country where you can make 100 percent profit doing your job, while outside you can’t make more than 10 percent,” he noted.
Umahi emphasized that Nigeria is full of opportunities, urging citizens to open their minds to possibilities rather than focus on negativity. He encouraged Nigerians to embrace forgiveness, optimism, and unity, saying that “bitterness and constant condemnation will not help anyone.”
Quoting a popular saying, he added: “Forgiveness sets the captive free, and when you are forgiven, you realize you were the captive.”
Umahi also praised President Bola Tinubu’s courage and resilience in managing what he described as a “terrible economic situation” inherited from the previous administration.
- “As a former governor, I understand what the president met on the ground. The debt burden was huge, and many capital projects had funds diverted for debt servicing. Despite this, President Tinubu never complained publicly — that’s true leadership,” Umahi said.
The minister maintained that Tinubu’s reforms are beginning to yield positive results, highlighting improvements in key economic indicators.

- “All the indices show that the reforms are breathing well. Inflation has dropped, GDP growth is above 4.2 percent, and foreign reserves have risen by over 42 percent. The worst is over, as the president said — the darkest part of the morning is the dawn,” he explained.
Umahi expressed optimism that ongoing infrastructure development and reforms will soon ease the current hardship and strengthen the economy.
“For me, the president has taken back the nation for us. Forget the noisemakers — hard work pays. Our generation must work even harder than our forefathers, because even the Bible says, ‘He that does not work should not eat,’” he concluded.
