The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called on the Federal Government to urgently release the two-month withheld salaries owed to its members who participated in the 2022 nationwide strike.
This demand was made during the union’s 51st National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State.

In a communique signed by SSANU National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the union also criticized the persistent delay in salary payments to staff of federal universities, saying payments are often made weeks after other federal workers receive theirs.
Key Demands from SSANU NEC Meeting:
🔹 Release of Withheld Salaries
SSANU urged the government to immediately pay the remaining two months’ salaries still withheld from 2022, stating that continued non-payment is unjustified and punitive.
🔹 Harmonised Salary Disbursement
The union called for uniformity in salary payments across federal and state institutions to promote fairness and equity in the university system.
🔹 Renegotiation of 2009 FG/SSANU Agreement
SSANU expressed disappointment over the government’s inaction on the long-standing 2009 FG/SSANU agreement, demanding immediate resumption of renegotiations to avert another industrial crisis.
🔹 Unjust Earned Allowance Allocation
The union slammed the ₦50 billion Earned Allowance disbursement, where only ₦10 billion (20%) was allocated to non-teaching unions like SSANU, NASU, and NAAT, calling it discriminatory and unfair.
- “This allocation violates the MoU signed in August 2022 and undermines the vital role of SSANU members in the university system,” the communique read.
Agreements and MoUs Must Be Honoured
SSANU further warned the government against its continued disregard for Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), Memoranda of Action (MoAs), and other collectively bargained agreements.
- “If this pattern of neglect continues, SSANU will explore all lawful and appropriate measures to compel compliance,” the union warned.
Rising Insecurity: SSANU Demands National Emergency
Reacting to the increasing insecurity, especially in Benue, Plateau, and other regions, SSANU called on the FG to declare a national emergency on security, invest in modern technology, and reform the country’s security architecture.
Economic Reforms Worsening Living Conditions
The union also expressed concern over the economic hardship triggered by recent reforms, including the fuel subsidy removal and currency unification policy.
- “Rising inflation, food prices, and declining purchasing power are crushing Nigerian workers and the vulnerable,” SSANU stated.
To cushion the impact, SSANU urged the government to implement targeted social protection measures such as:
- Food subsidies
- Fuel vouchers
- Conditional cash transfers

- “The Federal Government must show sincerity and responsiveness in addressing our demands,” the union stated.
