Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Nigerian Senate, has officially announced her decision to leave the Labour Party (LP) and join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a viral video shared on social media and reported by The Nation, Senator Kingibe cited the deepening internal crisis and division within the Labour Party as the reason behind her defection.
- “I’m totally and completely committed to ADC,” she said. “But obviously, as the Senator representing the FCT, don’t expect me to just take a lunch break and go and collect card. I want to do so with noise and fanfare.”
Kingibe: Labour Party Is Split Into Two Factions
Addressing concerns about the constitutional implications of her defection, Senator Kingibe argued that the Labour Party is currently split into two clearly distinct factions, which, under Nigeria’s constitution, gives her the legal right to switch parties without losing her seat.
“I ask you to please read the constitution. There are two factions clearly of the Labour Party. That is the perfect definition that the constitution gives for somebody to decamp without penalty,” she explained.
She further noted that INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) had received two sets of candidates and results from the warring LP factions, which reinforces the legitimacy of her claims.
“Even INEC got two sets of results and candidates, though they didn’t accept any. So, which faction of the Labour Party do you want me to stay in?” she asked rhetorically.
Senator Kingibe to Formalize Defection With Ceremony
While she has already pledged full allegiance to the ADC, Senator Kingibe revealed that an official defection ceremony with fanfare will be held soon.

She also commented on the leadership of ADC and the broader opposition coalition, saying:
“It’s something that is evolving. So you cannot say while your child is still crawling that you are not happy with how he’s going to run. You wait. We are growing.”
Kingibe was among the prominent politicians present at the July 2 unveiling of ADC as the new platform for the opposition coalition in Abuja.
Her move is expected to further reshape the dynamics of opposition politics in the 2025 pre-election landscape, especially in the FCT and across the country.
