Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South in the Nigerian Senate, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Nigeria’s security and economic sectors, warning that the country is heading into a deeper crisis if urgent action is not taken.
Ndume made this urgent call during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, where he also criticized President Tinubu’s recent decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State due to political unrest.
The senator emphasized that the President should focus on addressing the nation’s security challenges, economic issues, and the welfare of citizens, saying, “Let the President forget about everything and concentrate on three things – security, welfare of citizens, and economy.” He further urged the President to treat these areas as top priorities and create a state of emergency in these sectors.
Ndume’s call comes amid growing frustration over Nigeria’s mounting problems, including rampant insecurity, surging inflation, a weakened naira, and declining public trust in governance. He also pointed out the need for urgent action to stabilize the country, particularly in light of the continuing violence from insurgents and criminal gangs across the country.
In criticizing Tinubu’s focus on Rivers State, Ndume said the political crisis in the state could have been better addressed through dialogue instead of imposing emergency rule. The President had suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, citing Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows for the suspension of constitutional procedures in response to national dangers or internal breakdowns of order.

However, Ndume expressed concern over the timing and necessity of such drastic action, questioning whether political reconciliation should have been prioritized over emergency rule. He argued, “I feel that the President would have worked seriously on bringing them (the political actors) and solving the problem rather than declaring a state of emergency.”
Ndume, who identifies himself as “a democrat,” also dismissed claims that political actors in Rivers had defied the President’s directives. He suggested that if the political actors had truly ignored the President, his suspension order would not have been so easily enforced.
Nigeria’s Economic and Security Crisis
Ndume’s comments reflect widespread concern over Nigeria’s deteriorating economic conditions and the resurgence of violence in many parts of the country. There are increasing calls from security experts, civil society groups, and Nigerian citizens urging President Tinubu to prioritize internal stability and economic reforms to address these critical national issues.
As the country grapples with these challenges, Ndume’s statement serves as a powerful reminder that Nigeria’s future stability depends on bold leadership focused on the nation’s most pressing concerns.
