ABUJA, Nigeria –
The Nigerian Senate has pledged to carry out robust oversight on the newly established South-West Development Commission (SWDC), promising effective monitoring to ensure good governance, accountability, and infrastructure development across the South-West geopolitical zone.
The commitment was made by Senator Yunus Akintunde, Chairman of the Senate Committee on SWDC, during the committee’s inaugural meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

Senator Akintunde emphasized that the Senate’s vision through this committee is to unlock the full socio-economic potential of the South-West, promoting economic growth, social justice, human capital development, and sustainable infrastructure.
“The establishment of this committee aligns with Section 62 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). It is a strategic move to strengthen our communities through sustainable development and shared responsibility,” Akintunde stated.
- He noted that the meeting marks the beginning of a purposeful journey and called for open dialogue, mutual respect, and collective decision-making to guide the committee’s activities.
- “This committee must serve as a space for innovation, inclusion, and the delivery of the true dividends of democracy,” he added.
- Senator Akintunde also announced that the screening of nominees for the SWDC’s governing board has been scheduled for June 18, 2025, noting that the calibre of members in the committee assures success.
“Great achievements come from unity and purpose. We have the right team, right purpose, and the right energy to make this commission succeed,” he declared.
