Sanwo-Olu Vows to Prosecute Attackers of LASTMA Officials.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has vowed that individuals who attack officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The governor made this known through his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, during the Second Lagos Traffic Conference, held on Tuesday as part of events marking LASTMA’s Silver Jubilee celebration.

Themed “Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities and Innovations,” the conference brought together key stakeholders in transportation and urban mobility.

  • “I want to specially recognise the men and women of LASTMA who, under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions, work tirelessly to keep Lagos moving,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
  • “Your uniform is the thin yellow line between order and chaos on our roads. Anyone who attacks a LASTMA officer attacks the system and will be prosecuted.”

The governor paid tribute to the fallen heroes of LASTMA, acknowledging those who lost their lives in the line of duty. He assured that the agency would evolve into a tech-driven institution, empowered with Artificial Intelligence (AI), automated number plate recognition systems, and drone surveillance to modernize traffic management and incident response.

Mr. Sridhar Uttara, President of U.S.-based engineering firm Infotran, delivered the keynote address. He advised Lagos to build a Unified Mobility Control Centre, train officers in AI and data analytics, and invest in smart mobility labs and research to improve transportation efficiency.

Special Adviser on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, stressed the role of LASTMA beyond clearing traffic, noting their importance in accident response, disaster coordination, and smooth transportation of goods and services.

“LASTMA officers face enormous challenges—urban population growth, driver indiscipline, and public apathy toward uniformed officers,” Giwa said. “Despite these hurdles, progress is being made under Governor Sanwo-Olu’s leadership.”

Dr. Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation and a former Lagos transport commissioner, described LASTMA as a policy masterstroke that balances enforcement with human dignity.

  • “Some of these officers lost their lives trying to restore order in Apapa. These are unsung heroes who must be appreciated for their sacrifices,” Opeifa said.

As Lagos State moves toward a smart mobility future, stakeholders call for sustained investment, public cooperation, and zero tolerance for attacks on traffic enforcement personnel.
