Sanwo-Olu Slams Peter Obi Over Criticism of Nigeria at U.S. Event.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has strongly criticized Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over comments he made about Nigeria during a recent appearance at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Sanwo-Olu accused Obi of making “disparaging comments” about Nigeria, stressing that prominent Nigerians traveling abroad should promote the country’s image rather than “de-market” it on the global stage.

“He made unflattering remarks not just about the incumbent Nigerian government, but also about Nigeria,” Sanwo-Olu said. “When prominent Nigerians go overseas, they ought to project Nigeria positively. True patriotism is about marketing our nation, not tearing it down.”

Reacting to Obi’s criticisms of the federal government’s economic policies and claims that these policies have worsened poverty, Sanwo-Olu defended President Bola Tinubu. He praised Tinubu’s legacy, noting that as Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007), Tinubu implemented policies that reduced poverty and boosted economic development.

Sanwo-Olu also took direct aim at Peter Obi’s record as former Governor of Anambra State, alleging that Obi neither built a single stand-alone school nor hospital during his eight-year tenure.

“Now, I find it ironic that Mr. Obi, who did not build a single school or sustainably provide credit facilities, would criticise the Government of Nigeria, which is actively doing that. President Tinubu, both as Lagos Governor and as Nigeria’s President, has built over 200 schools and provided student loans to more than 200,000 undergraduates,” he stated.

Highlighting further, Sanwo-Olu claimed that poverty worsened in Anambra under Obi’s leadership.

“Under Peter Obi’s tenure, the poverty rate in Anambra increased from 41.4% to 53.7%. However, under his successor, Willie Obiano, poverty was drastically reduced to 14.8%,” the governor alleged.

Challenging Obi’s moral authority to criticize the government, Sanwo-Olu concluded, “Mr. Obi contributed to the increase in poverty in Nigeria. Governor Tinubu lifted millions out of poverty. Being that the case, who should criticise whom?”

This confrontation highlights ongoing tensions between major political figures in Nigeria and raises fresh debates about leadership performance, economic development, and national image projection.
