Sambo Dasuki, Others Re-Arraigned Over Alleged ₦33.2 Billion Fraud.

A former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), alongside three others, has been re-arraigned before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja over an alleged ₦33.2 billion fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought fresh charges against Dasuki, a former General Manager of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Aminu Baba-Kusa, and two companies—Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.

Details of the Charges

  • The defendants face a 32-count charge, including:
  • Criminal breach of trust
  • Dishonest release of public funds
  • The case was reassigned to Justice Charles Agbaza by the FCT Chief Judge, Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf, who had previously handled it.

Background of the Case

Dasuki was initially arraigned on December 14, 2015, before Justice Baba-Yusuf on 19 counts related to an alleged ₦15.5 billion fraud. The case was later amended, removing co-defendant Shuaibu Salisu, and a new 32-count charge involving ₦33.2 billion was filed.

However, the trial stalled after the prosecution presented only one witness, the investigating officer, who did not complete his testimony before the case was indefinitely adjourned.

Additionally, the EFCC had another case against Dasuki in 2015, where he was charged alongside:

  • Former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda
  • Ex-Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa
  • Bafarawa’s son, Sagir Bafarawa
  • Dalhatu Investment Limited

They faced a 25-count charge for alleged criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of ₦19.4 billion. That case was recently transferred to Justice Yusuf Halilu.

Court Proceedings and Adjournment

At the resumed hearing on Tuesday, Dasuki and other defendants pleaded not guilty to the 32 counts read to them.

The prosecution counsel, Oluwaleke Atolagbe, requested a trial date, while defense lawyers A.A. Usman and Richard Ibiye urged the court to allow their clients to continue on existing bail conditions, emphasizing their compliance with court proceedings.

Justice Agbaza granted the request and adjourned the trial to July 1, 2025.

Legal Battle & Bail Controversy

The trial has faced multiple delays, primarily due to the Department of State Services (DSS) refusing to release Dasuki on bail, despite court orders.

This latest development signals a renewed legal battle over one of Nigeria’s high-profile corruption cases.
