The Rivers State government has uncovered thousands of ghost workers and retirees following a recent verification exercise of civil servants and pensioners across the state.

According to official figures, only 37,703 civil servants were confirmed as genuine employees, a sharp drop from the previous record of over 43,000. Similarly, the number of verified pensioners stood at 19,186, compared to more than 25,500 earlier recorded.

The revelation was made by the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas, during a meeting with labour union leaders on Friday at the Government House. He highlighted several discrepancies exposed by the verification process.

Ibas explained that only 2,004 local government pensioners were verified out of more than 2,600 previously listed, while about 8,000 staff were confirmed across seven local government areas, including Obio/Akpor, Bonny, Etche, and Degema.

He gave a deadline of September 4, 2025, for the completion of the local government staff verification, assuring that all state resources would be deployed to meet the target.

Reiterating his zero-tolerance policy on corruption, the Sole Administrator disclosed that while efforts are ongoing, only arrears for March 2025 have so far been cleared due to challenges with the verified records. He further revealed that an overpayment of ₦117 million was discovered in the March schedule, prompting an official investigation.
