The Head of Service of Rivers State, Dr. George Nwaeke, has resigned from office, marking another major development in the state’s political landscape.
His resignation was announced on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral (retd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.
Interim Replacement Announced
Following Nwaeke’s departure, Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown, the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, has been appointed in an acting capacity until a substantive Head of Service is named.
Administrator’s Statement on Nwaeke’s Resignation
The statement expressed appreciation for Nwaeke’s service under the Sole Administrator, despite his short tenure, and wished him success in his future endeavors.
“His Excellency, The Administrator appreciates the immense contributions he has shown this administration in the short period he served and wishes him well in his future endeavors.”
Resignation Follows State of Emergency Declaration
Nwaeke’s resignation comes just a week after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Ordu, and all members of the State Assembly.
The move has been met with widespread criticism from major political figures, civil society organizations, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and a significant portion of Rivers State residents.
Recent Key Appointments in Rivers State
In a separate development, Vice Admiral Ibas recently appointed Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
According to a statement, Worika was selected after a rigorous evaluation of his credentials, extensive experience, and outstanding performance. His background spans academia, international legal practice, and high-level policy advisory roles, making him well-suited to support the Administrator’s mission.
His appointment takes immediate effect.
