Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a former Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader coalition of opposition parties preparing to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

Rhodes-Vivour made the announcement on Saturday during a political event in Lagos, despite initial attempts by security operatives to frustrate the gathering. According to reports, police barred his supporters from accessing the original venue in Alimosho before the event was later relocated within the area.

Speaking during his declaration, Rhodes-Vivour described the ADC coalition as a platform for unity and national rescue. “I am happy to become part of this family. I’m looking forward to the union and governance that this party will bring to Nigerians. My prayer is that God will grant our leaders and the party’s structure the wisdom to come together and define a new path for our beloved country,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of opposition unity ahead of 2027, insisting that divided political forces cannot defeat the APC. “This is a coalition that is meant to rescue Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I have maintained that we cannot afford to divide the opposition going into the next election. We must come together, united through a robust coalition that will stand a chance in 2027 to deliver this country,” he added.

The Lagos ADC Chairman, George Ashiru, hailed the defection as historic, describing it as the affirmation of a movement that had “shaken Lagos in the last election.” He emphasised that the coalition, which began as informal communication during the 2023 polls, had now matured into a formidable third force to challenge the APC’s dominance.

Also speaking at the event, Professor Ola Olateju, representing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, urged ADC members to believe in their collective capacity to rescue Nigeria. “ADC is not just a political party; it’s a movement of the people. It is an exodus. We are moving to rescue Nigeria,” he declared.

With Rhodes-Vivour’s defection, the ADC-led coalition appears to be gathering momentum, strengthening opposition ranks and raising anticipation for a stronger challenge in the 2027 elections.
