Hospitals across Nigeria have been thrown into crisis as the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on a five-day warning strike, leaving patients stranded.

The industrial action, which began on Friday, September 12, was confirmed in a statement by NARD Secretary-General, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku, via the association’s official X handle.

The strike follows the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the Federal Government on September 10, 2025, demanding urgent reforms in the health sector.

• “The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors hereby notifies all members that the five-day warning strike has commenced today, in line with our NEC decision. We urge every member across all centres to comply fully with this directive,” Odunbaku stated.

Why the Doctors Are on Strike

NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundare, explained that the decision was fueled by poor working conditions, power shortages in hospitals, downgrading of certificates, poor remuneration, and welfare concerns.

The doctors insist that the strike is aimed at pushing for better welfare, improved working conditions, and a stronger healthcare system for Nigerians.

The strike has left millions of Nigerians stranded, especially those who depend heavily on public hospitals for medical care.

This action coincides with the seven-day strike already declared by the Association of Resident Doctors, FCTA, which started on Monday, further compounding the healthcare crisis.
