The House of Representatives has taken a major step towards restructuring Nigeria’s local government system by passing a bill for the second reading that seeks to upgrade Lagos State’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) into full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
If the bill is approved, Lagos will see its local government count rise from 20 to 57, increasing the total number of LGAs in Nigeria from 774 to 811.
The 37 LCDAs were originally created during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor (1999–2007), a move that led to a faceoff with then-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who responded by withholding Lagos State’s federal allocations.
This bill, sponsored by Abiodun Faleke and 21 other lawmakers, proposes a constitutional amendment to officially recognize the additional Lagos LGAs, ensuring their inclusion in the First Schedule – Section 3, Part 1 of the 1999 Constitution.

If passed, the new Lagos LGAs will include Agege, Orile-Agege, Alimosho, Agbado-Oke-Odo, Ayobo-Ipaja, Egbe-Idimu, Igando-Ikotun, Mosan-Okunola, and many more, significantly altering the political and administrative structure of Nigeria’s commercial capital.
