Amid growing concerns over the misinterpretation of judicial rulings in Nigeria, House of Representatives member Clement Jimbo has called for urgent legal reforms to ensure court judgments are delivered in clear and unambiguous terms.
Rep Jimbo Reacts to Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Senate Drama
Jimbo, who represents the Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency, made the call during a live appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ on Friday. His remarks follow the controversy surrounding a recent Federal High Court judgment involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central and the Nigerian Senate.
Conflicting Interpretations Spark Constitutional Confusion
The judgment, according to Jimbo, triggered a constitutional standoff, as both the senator and the Senate gave conflicting interpretations of the ruling. Senator Natasha attempted to resume legislative duties, citing the court’s statement, but was blocked by Senate security, who maintained that the ruling did not include an order for her recall.
Proposed Constitutional Review to Clarify Legal Language
Jimbo urged the National Assembly to take action through a joint initiative between the Constitutional Review Committee and the Committee on Judiciary.
- “We should set up an ad hoc committee to review relevant sections of our constitution and laws,” he stated.
- “Judges should be guided by a standard template to write rulings in a way that’s free from ambiguity.”

Judiciary Must Maintain Independence — But With Clarity
While reaffirming his respect for the independence of the judiciary, Jimbo emphasized the need for plain, direct language in court rulings to prevent public confusion or legal missteps.
Background: Natasha vs. Senate
The Federal High Court judgment at the center of the controversy has led to a standstill, with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan insisting it legitimized her return to the Senate, while the legislative body argued otherwise.
