In a surprise announcement, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a three-day Ukraine ceasefire from May 8 to 10, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, which the Kremlin confirmed on Monday.
The temporary truce, aimed at commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II Victory Day, is scheduled to begin from midnight on May 7 and end at midnight on May 10. According to Kremlin sources, all combat operations will be suspended during this period, and Moscow has called on Ukraine to reciprocate the gesture.
“The Russian side is declaring a ceasefire during the Victory Day period. We expect Ukraine to do the same. Any violations will be met with an effective response,” the Kremlin said.

The ceasefire announcement comes just weeks after a similar Easter truce, which both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaching. However, the Easter pause did result in a temporary reduction in hostilities.
This move comes at a critical moment as international pressure mounts for a more lasting ceasefire. The United States, which recently proposed a 30-day unconditional ceasefire, expressed skepticism about Putin’s intentions, especially following recent Russian missile strikes in Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, and Sumy that killed dozens of civilians.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend, questioned Putin’s sincerity, stating: “There was no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas… maybe he doesn’t want to stop the war.”
Despite the ceasefire gesture, Russia maintains tough demands for peace, including international recognition of its annexation of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—a condition Ukraine and its Western allies have firmly rejected.
Meanwhile, in a major development, Russia announced full control of the Kursk region over the weekend, allegedly with support from North Korean troops. Putin personally thanked Kim Jong Un for the assistance, raising new concerns about Russia’s growing military ties with North Korea.

On the battlefield, Russian forces also claimed to have captured the village of Kamianka in northeastern Kharkiv, continuing a string of tactical advances.
As global powers watch closely, the brief truce may offer a small window of peace, but skepticism remains over whether it signals genuine progress or another strategic pause in a long, grinding war.
