Protesters Storm AGF’s Office, Demand Investigation Into Mele Kyari, NNPCL Transactions.

A group of protesters under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption on Tuesday stormed the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), demanding the immediate probe and prosecution of former NNPC CEO, Mele Kyari.

Naija Blog Daily reports that the protest follows the removal of Kyari and the entire NNPCL board by President Bola Tinubu on April 2, 2025, a move that was widely welcomed across the country. However, the protesters expressed disappointment that no investigations have been launched into alleged corruption and mismanagement under Kyari’s leadership.

Allegations of Mismanagement and Debt

Led by its convener, Kabir Matazu, the group highlighted several allegations:

Billions of dollars have reportedly been spent on refinery rehabilitation without transparency.

Conflicting figures in the rehabilitation of Port Harcourt Refinery, including a claim that Matrix Energy invested $400 million, despite a Federal Executive Council approval of $1.5 billion for the same project.

An alarming $2 billion debt to Matrix Energy, allegedly being serviced through daily crude oil allocations, with no clear repayment structure.

Matazu queried:

“Why is the Federal Government indebted to Matrix Energy to the tune of $2 billion? Why is this debt being serviced with crude oil instead of cash? Who signed off on these deals, and why is the public in the dark?”

Calls for a Judicial Review and Transparency

The group urged AGF Fagbemi to launch a judicial review of all agreements entered into by the NNPCL under Kyari’s leadership, insisting that these deals could have serious financial implications for Nigeria, especially amid current economic challenges.

Matazu said:

“This investigation is critical to uncover the Federal Government’s financial losses and to ensure the recovery of looted funds. Nigerians need transparency and accountability in how national resources are managed.”

More Protests Loom

The Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, also called for a commission of inquiry into the NNPCL’s refinery projects, vowing to continue protesting until an investigation is launched.
